About Fenton MI
Located in Genesee County, Fenton is a growing community in southeast Michigan with a population of just under 12,000 people. The city is conveniently located along U.S. 23, providing easy access to Flint, Ann Arbor, Lansing and the Detroit metropolitan area. One of Fenton’s defining geographic features is the Shiawassee River, which flows directly through the heart of downtown and Millpond Park. The surrounding area is also known for its abundance of lakes, with nearly 60 lakes located within a 10-mile radius.
Fenton was first settled in the 1830s and was originally known as “Dibbleville.” The community was later renamed Fenton and grew into an important regional transportation and commercial center after the railroad arrived in the 1850s. Today, Fenton is best known for its historic downtown, riverfront parks, locally owned restaurants and shops, and the Silver Lake area. Downtown Fenton retains much of its historic character while offering modern dining, shopping and community gathering spaces along the Shiawassee River.
