What To Do When You Think Someone Is Suicidal

If you think a friend or loved one may be suicidal, it’s important to help them get help. However, knowing what to do and how to help in situations like this can be stressful as you care deeply for that loved one. Here are a few steps you can take to protect someone you think may be suicidal:

  • Follow Up And Ask About Their Situation – If someone you know is threatening suicide or has mentioned it online, in person, or anywhere else, follow up with them. Talk to them in person and reach out to ask if they’re thinking about suicide, and learn more about their situation. Even though it might seem awkward to address the topic at first, it is very important that you do! Sometimes people are calling out because they need someone to hear them.
  • Get Help From Family Or Friends – Support from loved ones is very important for suicidal individuals. We recommend asking for additional help from their family members, your family members, or other loved ones if you think someone you know is thinking about suicide.
  • Call A Crisis Hotline Or Hospital For Help – You should encourage the suicidal person to call a crisis hotline or to go to a local hospital if they are having thoughts of suicide. You can work with them, family members, and other loved ones to create a safety plan for them.
  • Call 911 – Remember, if you think these suicidal threats are credible and the person does not respond to you, you should call 911. If your instincts tell you the situation is dangerous, it probably is. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
