Therapy for Life Transitions in Grand Rapids

What is a Life Transition?

A life transition is any extreme change that occurs in your life; the change may come to you as a complete surprise or could be expected. Life transitions may be negative in nature or also positive. Some examples of life transitions are switching schools, moving, changes in relationship status, getting a new job, the loss of a loved one, or the birth of a new child. Whether the life transition is considered negative or positive all large life transitions have one thing in common, they produce stress. Stress is common during these major changes because life transitions usually involve experiencing something that you have never experienced before. When going through a life transition it is extremely common to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and confused among many other emotions

Therapy for Life Transitions

There are many reasons that therapy for life transitions can be beneficial for anyone experiencing a big life change. One reason is that when experiencing the large amount of emotions that come from your life transitions, it may be difficult to express, recognize, and navigate through them on your own. Life Transition Counseling in Grand Rapids can help you learn to cope with the stress and other negative emotions you may be feeling.

Psychotherapy may also be helpful in allowing you to positively explore your life transition in a way that provides you with a positive new outlook, by viewing the transition as providing new chances for you to grow and opportunities. Going through a life transition alone can be extremely hard and overwhelming, so having a support system can also be very valuable. If you do not feel that you have the support that you need to endure your life transition, then you can find that support by talking to a professional in life transition counseling. Even those who do have a support system can still benefit from therapy for life transitions, because of the free, open, and safe atmosphere it provides as you experience many different reactions and emotions to your life transition.

Life Transition Counseling Diagnosis – Adjustment Disorder

In some life transition counseling cases, a diagnosis of an Adjustment Disorder may be given to someone who is experiencing a difficult life transition. An Adjustment Disorder is when an individual has either behavioral or emotional symptoms after experiencing one or more psychosocial stressors. The symptoms should be present within the first few months after experiencing the stressor, and they must remit within six months to a year of the stressor ending. Individuals with an adjustment disorder may experience an anxious or depressed mood, a disturbance of their emotions, or a disturbance in their conduct. Having an Adjustment Disorder simply means that there has been a transition in your life and you are having to cope with those new changes.
